I had this game when I was a kid. It was in elementary school to be sure. I loved it so much. They don’t make games like this any more. It came with a HUGE pre-pressed fibre glass board unlike anything you will find today. All sorts of little pieces to get lost.
Anyhow … the game is sort of a Indiana Jones style adventure. The object of the game is to grab the crystal from the top of the mountain and make your way down the other side beating all the other competitors.
The paths are basically little chutes that allow for marbles or “Fireballs” to run down as cards are played. Fireballs are used to hinder your opponents in their quest to take YOUR jewel.
The game play is really very simple. You race for he jewel taking shortcuts and the like along the way. Once a player gets the jewel it’s a chase to get it from them and make it to the end. Along the way you thwart your competitors with FIREBALLS! Sometimes if you’re lucky the marble won’t touch your guy and you’ll dodge a bullet and get to say “neener-neener”. I don’t recommend it as karma has a habit of punching you in the ear. Smug inner satisfaction is the key here people.
It’s a simple game but one that I’ve never forgotten and praise ebay quarterly for having got it back.
This is a really cool exercise in minimalist living. These are prefab houses that are 12x12x12. They have bedroom, living room, bathroom and kitchen. They are a great option for laneway housing or extra accommodation at family cabins and the like.
The owner of the company James Stuart lived in one for a year to prove that it can be done.
You can find them here: http://www.twelve3.ca/about.html
If you are thinking of laneway housing or just putting some guest accommodation in you should seriously have a look at this.
Love this tune. It was on “The Zone” in Victoria last week and I’ve been listening to it almost non-stop since. Noveau Disco FTW.
On a note it makes watching meteors THAT much cooler.
Enjoy!
Which is to say that I’ve been busy and haven’t had much time to dedicate to da blog.
However I must say that if you are in Vancouver, or wherever you are really, support your local comedy scene. There are some people out there that will seriously make you laugh.
I had the opportunity to take in a competition last night and meant to catch it again but got tied up and tired. So many funny people that have a lot of courage and a whole lot of talent.
Local comedy. Get into it.
I’ve got nothing. Been busy the last little while and had much on the go. I’ll come up with something new soon … I hope.
I love Seoul. I didn’t think I would either. We visited Seoul on the way home from our first trip to meet our son in Vladivostok. When we went in October 2008 we had no idea what to expect. We were pretty confident about Vladivostok. It was Russian. Russia was kind of European. We’d been to Europe. It was no biggie. Seoul on the other hand was foreign. We’d never been to any part of Asia. It was big and a little intimidating.
Turns out we had it all wrong. Vladivostok was a little scary. It was dirty and unfriendly. At least at first glance. Seoul was amazing. It felt like a big Richmond. We did get taken for the proverbial ride with the cab at the airport but that was about it.
We stayed near Gyeongbokgung Palace which was amazing. We were also near a whole bunch of embassies and the Korean Presidential residence. It was great.
We were also walking distance to this great street called Insadong. It’s a regular street during the week but on the weekends it shuts down to become a pedestrian mall. IT has all sorts of cool shops and little alleys that snake off it. Very cool. There was also a great big Buddhist temple right around the corner. This temple had some amazing statues.
We also took a tour up to the DMZ. Something I wouldn’t do now (possible war) but was cool at the time. You can skip the tunnels though. Go down and see them but you don’t need to bother trekking up and back. This was accompanied by a trip to a folk museum that was also well worth it. Kind like a really big Burnaby Village Museum.
I could have stayed 3 weeks in Seoul instead of just 3 days. If you have the opportunity I highly recommend it.
There is nothing so awesome as finding something new. I especially love finding new music. I was at my wife’s family’s cabin over the long weekend. The island has an annual party and at this party I found “Bongo Bong” by Manu Chao. Love it.
I’ve had it going on my ipod almost continuously since I got home. Perhaps it’s because it reminds me of a really great party with family or that it’s just a catchy tune but I love it.
It’s funny how songs can get paired with memories. The Beatles and Sgt Pepper are forever linked in my mind with this scar I have on my chin. I got it when I went head first through an etched glass window while being a jackass when I was 8 years old. That’s another story but after getting home from the hospital with my mum I got to fall asleep in the living room listening to Sgt Pepper on vinyl. So now every time I hear that album I think of that night.
I will now forever link this song to a warm Summer evening on an island at a party with family.
You may have already seen these.
I love these pictures. In the 3 wishes category time travel is top of the charts. Just as an observer though. I’d lov eto experience any given era but have no effect on it. No Butterfly Effect for me as it were. I’d just like to be a bit of a ghost. Those pictures are as close as I’ll ever get I think.
I think it’s why I love period movies. It’s kinda like a little window into another time. Where you can take a peek and see what was what. Same thing for historical novels. Though I prefer movies because I’m simple like that. If there is anything that historical pictures can’t do it’s give you a sense of colour and smell. That’s what I really want to see. I want to see and feel what things were like. That’s all. I don’t want to get rich or change what is or what was. I just want to see it.
I wouldn’t even know where to begin. I think WWII would be high on the list along with the post war era in Europe. I don’t know why WWII has always interested me. I think war is abhorrent but this is the last war that really see being a necessity. It had to be fought. From my North American perspective in any case. Germans might have a different view.
What did a Shakespeare play look like in 1600?
What did a Mozart concerto sound like in 1781?
How did the battle of Hastings really go down in 1066?
The list goes on and on and has so many permutations. That’s what I think of when I see those pictures linked at the top.
That’s a quote from Charles H. Duell the head of the US Patent Office in 1899.
Quite a quote to hang your hat on. I thought about that when writing about twitter. I am constantly amazed at what people keep coming up with. At the same time I look back and marvel at people did before all these amazing modern conveniences came up.
Apollo 13 made it to space and back with little more power than a calculator for electronic aid. Their computer was their BRAINS! To think that today I walk around checking in on my tweeps on a tiny little Blackberry is crazy.
I can look back over my own relatively short lifetime as well and see how much has changed. PC’s, Cordless Phones, Cell Phones, Smart Phones, GPS. There was a time when you had to spread a map on the hood of your car if you got lost. Not anymore.
That’s kinda neat but I think it also spells a certain loss of romanticism. Wrong turns don’t happen like they used to. I think there a great many wonderful stories that came from a wrong turn. Oh well … Progress!
